Drunkie / Port of Menteith · Callander · Kilbarchan
John was baptised at Port of Menteith on 20 January 1795. The censuses later give his birthplace as Callander, Perthshire. He was not born in Kilbarchan, but far away in Perthshire; he must have met Janet Mitchell there and married her when she was 23 and he around 29. It is likely he was an ambitious lad, keen to learn silk hand-loom weaving.
Nine of them lived and worked in a cottage similar to the National Trust pair in Shuttle Street. In 1841 four children between 12 and 15 were already silk hand-loom weaver apprentices.
