Duncan appears in the Finart school records in 1773, aged 17, able to write and do arithmetic. He married Grisell Kennedy in the parish of Fortingall on 27 May 1792. Within a very short time they had moved to Port of Menteith in the Callander region of Perthshire, where their first child Angus was born in 1793 and their second son John in 1795.

In 1851, aged about 98 and described as an agricultural labourer born in Rannoch, he is in the Kilbarchan household of his son John. That census appearance is the hinge of the whole trail: it names Rannoch, and it puts three generations under one roof.

Duncan Hartley climbed Schiehallion in 2000 and wrote that he felt this Duncan with him all the way.
