After a tough, frustrating 45 hours of difficult travelling, the final 3 hours were unmitigated bliss! The gods were smiling down on us as we approached El Chalten and the magnificent Mt Fitzroy welco...

A 45 second video summary of a 13 hour night flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires. The first time I've had my safety demonstration done, not by the plane stewards, but in this case, by the Argentine foo...

I'm British. Queuing is supposed to be in my blood, a national sport I'm meant to excel at. But it turns out, I absolutely hate it. What I truly love is the alternative I'm experiencing right now: bei...

Well, that was stressful. From arrival at the airport to sitting down with a well deserved beer took 2.5 hours! Long queues at checkin/bag drop, security and passport control. Making me think serious...

There’s a certain magic that settles in once you’re finally on your way. The frantic energy of the last few weeks begins to dissolve, replaced by the gentle hum of the engine and the promise of advent...
It's always quite a sad moment when we go on our travels to leave home and our dogs. Even more so when it's an extended trip. Do they sense it will be a lengthy parting or is it just us assuming so? S...
Very soon we head south to Patagonia. Been looking for software to record our TravelLog. I use 11ty for my sites but it's not for posting from mobiles. WordPress overly complex. Mastodon ... don't wan...

The week before an extended trip is always fraught with packing chaos. What to take, what to travel with etc. Made even more complex because our trip is to the other side of the world In a land of ice...
@TimKStanton if we were out for a week or two on an expedition it would be too cramped. You need space if bad weather prevents onward travel, but we shall only be heading out if the forecast is reason...

Spent a few hours today thinking about a tent for Patagonia. Don't need expedition tent as only out for 3 days max at a time. Given ferocity of weather in Patagonia it needs to be very strong to withs...

At the end of October 2025 my wife and I head back to the town of El Chalten in Patagonia. Its a place we have visited on six previous occasions. This time however we shall not be venturing onto the v...
@TimKStanton not sure I'm quite up to an expedition on the Southern Patagonian Icecap as this image shows but we are hoping to get on some glaciers. Think we shall take crampons and snowshoes as well...
@Mountains I first visited El Chalten in 2006. It was a real frontier town then. Only 1 restaurant! Been back there 5 times since, last time in 2016. Used to go to venture onto the Patagonian Icecap....

@bergmeister It certainly beats my self made map of the northern section of a trek on the Patagonian Icecap which I made in 2010 using a large scale map but with my own grid lines superimposed (and pr...
@ak I've found the Samaya great for expeditions and winter, bad weather protection etc. Very solid. The Durston Poles seems quite an expensive option when we all carry our own anyway?
@Ali The Samaya 2.5 is very expensive, but would be a solid expedition tent as there is plenty of room for 2 people + gear.
@Badgardener I had one of those Tadpole's too, a very good tent. I also remember lugging a 4kg Terra Nova Quasar for 12 days around the Patagonian Icecap. Stood up to 100km winds. Gone are those days...
@Ali we did our own dehydrated food for a couple of Patagonia expeditions years ago. Weight conscious though. Dehydrated veggies and had then with either very thin pasta/smash/couscous and a choice of...
@JakeHikes yes we have the vestibule which is great for expeditions but we don't bother for overnight trips. Condensation hasn't been a problem so far in cold and dry conditions but will need managing...
