Base camp Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Kamchatka after being hit by 100km/hr winds which included volcanic stones and rocks. Totally destroyed and, unfortunately, the end of our adventure.

Some photos from our expedition to climb/ski Klyuchevskaya Sopka in Kamchatka. Fantastic experience, lovely people and an amazing country, but harsh weather and mountain conditions. The mountain even started erupting just before we arrived to add to the excitement

@jds Fascinating. We were there to climb/ski Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Very cold -30C, and the mountain blew up just before we arrived! High winds and volcanic stones destroyed base camp. Would I return? You bet. Will post a few more images later

@leif that's really cool. What software you using?

@tapasinthesun Fantastic shot! Am going there on Monday and Tuesday next. One of my favourite places, never tire of it. Looks amazing in B&W, might try some

@Steveb I'm a bit of a latecomer to the prime lens scene, preferring the flexibility of a zoom lens. Things are changing though and I think photography is more fun if you have to work a bit harder for it.

View Original

Many "proper" photographers prefer to carry a variety of prime lenses so they can swap around at will. Not me, age is against me and travelling lightweight has become the norm. I think for now I will stick with my "Nifty Fifty" and have some fun.

Certainly not as convenient as a zoom lens though, so I found myself having regularly to move around to find a suitable vantage point to frame a shot. To be honest, it was enjoyable and made me think more about the image I was trying to convey, rather than just zoom in/out to frame the shot.

Room with a view! I've often wondered what stories this old house has to tell.

Was out yesterday with my 50mm prime lens. Sometimes called a "Nifty Fifty", this lens has a fixed focal length of 50mm, so you cannot zoom in nor out. These type of lenses are generally not only cheaper than zoom lenses, they are lighter and of good quality too. I guess due the simpler nature of their construction.

For those interested ... I used theskylive.com/ to ascertain where it was in relation to my location/time. Then the app "Stellarium" to find out exactly where it should be. Couldn't be seen with naked eye nor binoculars so it was aim in general direction with the camera and hope for the best.

So once again this valiant Comet hunter ventured out into the cold morning air. This time with all body extremities warmed up. Gottcha! Found Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) towards the north east. Couldn't be seen with my binoculars, but the camera managed to. Hopefully next week it will be brighter and easier to spot.

Photo from a few years ago ... Some of the most difficult ski touring I've ever done, whilst attempting the peak of Klyuchevskaya Sopka in Kamchatka. Here, trying to negotiate the rocky and volcanic dust laden glacier. Almost like a scene from a SciFi movie.

@Steveb its very difficult. There's just not a lot of money in having a small holding these days, especially for the younger person. Very hard work for little return. Its sad to see so much land going to waste as then older generations pass on. We have so much "abandoned" land and buildings around our house
