@Ali absolutely. And it's not a finite thing. Every trip is different. You can only go ultralight IMO if you are very familiar with your terrain know the worst likely expected weather and ground conditions. For example it's easy here in the summer Sierra Nevada as weather is generally stable for weeks on end. In those mountain conditions I can get base weight of 5kg. In spring or autumn conditions my base weight would rise to between 8kg and 10kg

View Original

@Ali congratulations, I think to get down to 8kg for NZ thru hike is really good. For comparison, same base weight as I would have for early summer trek in the Pyrenees also taking axe and crampons for snow crossings

View Original

@bergmeister for me it would be the Dolomites, probably one of the thru hikes like the Alta Via 2

@hikingdude Ive reverted back Franz. RSS should work again now. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. Have a good day!

View Original

@hikingdude thanks for the warning Franz. That's what comes when you have too much time on your hands and you start "messing". This week I changed from a Static Site generator (11ty) to a ClassicPress CMS converted to static site. All works well until you realise that things like RSS feeds have been forgotten in the change 🤣 .

Anyway, I will rectify later this afternoon as I am changing back to the original format. Thanks again for the "heads up" 🙏

Post Christmas morning walk with the dogs. Arko looking quite pleased with himself, for some reason!

@intrepidhero @GPJohnston works of art aren't they? And what fireside winter reading and inspiration they provide!

View Original

@Ali I'm not really into Christmas but today I'm heading up to a mates house for curry style Christmas fare. He's a professional chef so should be interesting.

@ewen wonderful!

Short hike up the Rio Lanjarón and back to town via the Cecarta acequia. Short and sweet. Have a great festive period

@thejtoken yeah me too. Says it all 😂

Early Christmas present from our local walking group. Says a lot doesn't it, especially the card, which reflects quite amusingly on some of my struggles and inability to find the correct route 🤣 🤣

A tee shirt with mountains leading to beer emblem, a bottle of pina colada and a card that reads "Is it really a path?"

@Ali exactly!!!!! Go for it

@ramontrivino es muy triste leer esto

View Original

@Badgardener I'm just a bit wary with headlines like these after seeing with my own eyes the consequences of Eco tourism growth in Patagonia recently.

View Original

Is this good or bad? Which path is this?

One path leads to a future where wilderness is a gated asset, a serene backdrop for the ultra-wealthy and conservation becomes a luxury business.

The other leads back to the core principles of true ecotourism and public protection, where conservation benefits ecosystems and local communities, and awe-inspiring places remain for all.

@bergmeister Congratulations on the 3 years and looking forward to 2026 in the mountains

View Original

@TimKStanton looks like you might have needed crampons on that summit ridge Tim? Looked very cold

View Original

@Ali yeah I saw that. Lots of accidents out there at the moment

View Original

@intrepidhero I need to drink more tea and less coffee, for sure

View Original

@Badgardener for me its not just the incredible feat of climbing the thing solo, its the incredibly long approach carrying all his own gear. Ive done this route to his base camp a few times and it's some of the toughest trekking Ive ever done. To do it solo requires a mental strength that I never even got close to

@intrepidhero nope. Not too much snow on Mt Hood yet

@bergmeister @richard I'm still testing my ability to run the self-host efficiently Sander. Will be keeping both for the foreseeable future. Will use the GoToSocial instance for long mountain posts (up to 5000 characters) and for tech related posts

View Original

After many previous failures incl managed hosts going out of business, I've finally got up & running on an old 2017 mini-pc from home

@richard

Allows me to do longer mountain posts with more images & also my grumpy ramblings & failings with technology, without clogging up this Mastodon feed.

As the introductory pinned post states "If you're a mountain person who loves tech (or a tech person who loves mountains), we probably have things in common."

View Original

@bergmeister just .... WOW!

View Original

@Ali yes I will, thanks. Your thinking sounds good to me, in fact it's the same route that I have been migrating to over the years

View Original

@ives @Ali oh I like the look of these. Thanks for sharing the link

@Ali Shield Air looks interesting, not heard of that

View Original

@Ali ponchos look naff but there are times when its really wet that they work well, including covering your rucksack. I find that modern, waterproof jackets just drip water off onto your thighs and legs so that means trousers too. Umbrella is best as long as it isnt at all windy

View Original

@hikingdude your trademark signature on this one Franz. Nice

View Original

@Ali or a massive poncho?

@andrewbriscoe fantastic image. I'm jealous!

@jds what a great time of day to be on the trail. Wonderful

View Original

@AdamBishop it was the sort of thing you set up and then forget about for years. A nightmare if you have to then set up again 20+ years later! You havent a clue

@AdamBishop 🤣

View Original

@AdamBishop There's been one for 20 years Adam 😄. I was messing about and decided to installed another OS and its not been playing well with the previous program (Xeoma). You'll find it at

Been a frustrating couple of days trying to install automatic webcam image capture & ftp upload to my website. Most programs are far too complex for this simple situation. Ended up with a simple python script. Doesn't help too when my computer wont stop sleeping, suspending or hibernating.

Then, one morning, all at once everything clicks and works fine 😀

@intrepidhero cracking images. I can see why you might dream about this place

In a few days I've gone from a southern hemisphere late spring/early summer to a northern hemisphere late autumn/early winter environment. Nowhere was this more evident than yesterday when hiking in the Vereda de Estrella, near Granada, approaching the north face of Alcazaba. Just glorious autumnal colours!

Walking

@mountainmindset thanks for sharing this. Much of what you say resonates with me and certainly being in nature and the mountains does help restore our individual mental balance. Without that I would be like the proverbial "fish out of water".

View Original

@TimKStanton Thanks Tim. Taking a lot of effort to get back in the real world 😀

@AdamBishop thanks Adam
